Built in 1980, by Janoush Marine Incorporated of Rosedale, Mississippi (hull #6) as the Melody Golding for the Ole Man River Towing Incorporated of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

In 1992, the tug was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas. Where the tug was renamed as the City of New Orleans.

Repowered in 1985, the tug is powered by three, Caterpillar 3512 diesel engines. She is a triple screw towboat, rated at 3,300 horsepower.
