Founded by John Robbins Jr. his family having lived in Virginia since the 17th century. The Robbins family lived as store keepers, fisherman, and master mariners on sailing vessels moving freight and coal along the east coast.

In 1936, John Robbins Jr. started shoveling coal on a Chesapeake Bay steamer. By the age of sixteen, he had worked his way to Captain on tugboats in and around Norfolk Harbor in Norfolk, Virginia.

During World War II, Captain Robbins left the towing industry to provide support for the war effort. After the war Robbins returned to Norfolk Harbor where he acquired his first tug in 1962.

Today, Robbins Maritime Incorporated is located at mile marker one, we are located in the heart of the Port of Norfolk, Virginia. Robbins Maritime provides shipyard assistance, barges, tugboats, launch and pilot services.
