Built in 1969, by Jakobson Shipyard Incorporated of Oyster Bay, New York (hull #401) as a fireboat for the Fire Department of New York of New York, New York.

In 1969, the vessel was deemed to small for the Fire Department of New York's needs. The hull was acquired by the Bronx Towing Line Incorporated of New York, New York. Where she was named as the Catherine.

The tug was later acquired by the Buchanan Marine Partnership Limited Incorporated of New Haven, Connecticut. Where she was renamed as the Buchanan 3.

In 2012, she was phased out of active service. And the tug was "laid up" at Oyster Bay, New York.

In 2022, the tug was scrapped at Tottenville, New York.

She was a twin screw tug, rated at 1,700 horsepower.
