
Built in 1972, by Halter Marine Services of Lockport, Louisiana (hull #321) as the Escatawpa for the Warrior and Gulf Navigation Company of Mobile, Alabama.
The tug was later acquired by Red Star Towing of Charleston, West Virginia. Where the tug retained her name.
She was eventually acquired by Madison Coal and Supply Company of Charleston, West Virginia. Where she retained her name.
In 2010, the Madison Coal and Supply Company, become Amherst Madison Incorporated of Charleston, West Virginia. Where the tug retained her name.
In 2014, Amherst Madison Incorporated renamed the tug as the George W. Jones III.
Repowered in 2002. She is driven by two Cummins KTA38-M1 diesel engines. The tug is twin screw pushboat, rated at 1,800 horsepower.
