Built in 1970, by Main Iron Works Incorporated of Houma, Louisiana (hull #236) as the Atlas for the Sabine Transportation Company of Port Arthur, Texas.

In 1967, the founders of Sabine Transportation Company merged with the with the Chromalloy American Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri. Where the tug retained her name.

In 1980, the Chromalloy American Corporation was acquired by the Sequa Corporation of New York. Where the tug retained her name.

In 1992, the former assets of the Sabine Transportation Company where acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas. Where the tug retained her name.

Powered by two, Volvo D25 diesel engines. She is a twin screw, towboat, rated at 1,020 horsepower.
