Founded at Seattle, Washington in 1909 by Captain Harry Crosby and L.S. Wood, the company provided long-haul ocean towing between Puget Sound and Southeast Alaska.

In 1979, Washington Tug and Barge was acquired by the Knappton Towboat Company of Astoria, Oregon and merged into their operations.
